Can we use the vb3 database in vb4?

So you want to use the database you have on localhost (for vb4) on your vb3.8 forum? You cannot do that. If you want to use your localhost database for vb4 on your online server, then you may import it and then upload all the vb4 files to your server and point the config.php file to the newly imported database.

Thnx for the reply Lyyne but i think you didn't get my question?

My problem is that i have a board running on vb3 and i want to move on vb4 but i don't want to upgrade i wanna go with a new installation so for that i have installed vb4 on my local host and downloaded my vb3 sql database only now what should i do to import the vb3 database in my installed vb4 on local-host actually i want to work on local host first to install all the mods etc and then i will upload it on my server after deleting the vb3. Hope you got my point now.

You run the upgrade.php script to update your vb3 database to vb4.

It sounds like what you are doing is setting up a test site to test your upgrade. So, you download the database, upload the vb4 files (to localhost) and then run the upgrade.php script to upgrade the database. Then go install your mods, create a style, etc. Then, when you are ready, you close your live site, upload all the vb4 files there, run the upgrade script and then upload/import all the same modifications and the style you created.

You realize that if you import your database, any links in your threads will be broken and everything is going to be renumbered (different threadids, postids, memberids, forumids, etc)? You may try with Impex if you want. That is available in your member download area. It is also not a supported method for upgrading.
