Starting new forums with vbulletin 3.8.7?

I have a spare vbulletin license that can use all versions of vBulletin till today including 4.2
Having played here and there with vBulletin 4 I am not comfortable with some of its front end features. Also people have been telling me that vBulletin 4 uses lot of resources and a dedicated server or vps is required after I reach certain traffic.

Vbulletin 3 however seems light on resources and doesn't seem like it would cause much trouble with good traffic (which I am certainly expecting). I need an opinion from the veterans if it is a good or bad idea from all perspectives, especially that vbulletin 3 has reached EOL. I see a lot of forums that still run on vbulletin 3 flawlessy because of current plugins or whatever reasons. Will there still be security patches in the future like the vbulletin 3.8 PL2?

vBulletin will stop supporting version 3 soon. However, you really don't need the support since the product is fully mature, and if you have a issue come up with it this community has alot of knowledgeable coders to help you.

I run 3.8 and am never going to 4 for any reason, ever.

Yeah vb 4 has lot of stuff I do not need, skinning aspect seems to be tougher than vb 3, though I did make some vb 4 custom themes it wasn't nearly as good as vb 3 themes. I also like my forum to remain a forum and not be a social networking or cms platform, vb 5 seems to move onto the social networking side, similar to Xen. I am left with vb 3 or MyBB but obviously paying 150+ for a license I feel I should make full use of vBulletin's Brand name.

My main concern is just the security patches. I don't want to keep getting hacked for new exploits being discovered and not be able to patch them. Hopefully vb.org would play a helpful role there.
