"Upload failed due to failure writing temporary file." on avatar upload?
 

So I'm currently using the latest version of 3.8 (just installed it). When I try to upload an avatar, I get this:

As well as a vbulletin message saying this: Upload failed due to failure writing temporary file.

Now i think I've found the solution, click here and here. However firstly, I have no idea how to work the solution as all that tech jargon goes over my head. If somebody could give me a dummy run down of what to do, that would be fab.

You need to create a folder called /home/nightclo/tmp, and set the permissions to 0x777. If you use ftp to upload your files to your server, you should be able to do it using your ftp program. If you can't figure it out, tell us what ftp program you're using and someone might be able to walk you through it.

When that's done, follow the rest of the instructions that Wayne posted in post# of this link: https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/show...-tempnam%28%29 (the second one you posted). He's refering to settings in the vbulletin adminCP, under the "Server Settings and Optimization Options" section.

I'm on shared hosting, will this still work?

Well, I have to admit I'm not an expert on different hosting situations, but I don't see why it wouldn't. Are you asking because you can't see how you would do it?

It's because 'nightclo' is the lowest I can get in my ftp, it's my base address. I can't see the 'home' folder I am in, but I'll give it a try and tell you how it goes.

Oh, right...maybe what I told you is wrong. I assumed /home/nightclo was the folder where your files were uploaded, but I should have asked. What is the path to your vb files?

No sorry I worked it out, I'm doing it through cpanel at the moment. In terms of setting permissions, what I'm seeing is something like this:look at the image under '3. Click on the "Change Permissions" link.'. 0x777 - would this be 077?

Edit: wait, no - you want 777 .
