Personally I think that it would be better to import the whole backup and then delete whatever stuff you do not want to keep. The quickest way to go about it would be to install vb 3.8.6 directly then restore the backup and as last step run the upgrade to bring the db up to date with the forum files.

P.s. 3.8.6 is an older version of the 3.8x series. Imho would be better to use the latest version of that serie. I believe that would be 3.8.7PL1 version.

why not put in a new install of 3.8.2 then put in backup then update to 3.8.6

Restore the backup.
Upload the files
Run the upgrade script.

There is away you could do it but would take a while and some care put a test forum up with the full backup installed on it then take the tables you need and run them as a SQL query into the real db. I am sure there is a better way to do it but to get just the tables you need this is the only way I can think of

You can't do that, you need to take the steps I listed.
