Renaming "Friends" to something else?

Hello,

I would like to manipulate the "friends" aspect of vBulletin and change the name of the system in order for it to serve another purpose.

So for example, how would I go about renaming "Friends" to "Buddies" for example? I would like to change that name from Friends to Buddies in each aspect of the "friends" system.

So instead of it saying "add as friend" I would like to rename it to "add as buddy", and when you get the notification asking you to confirm this, I would like every instance of "friend" renamed to "buddy"

Anyone know how to do this?

Thanks!

You should be able to use "Search in Phrases" under Languages & Phrases to find every phrase containing 'friend' and translate it to something else (copy the phrase to the "translation" text box at the bottom, then make your changes). There may also be some text in the templates, so use "Search in Templates" to check for that end edit any templates found.

Thanks! I was hoping it would be easy like that.

Any idea what templates the "Friends" stuff is inside? I don't want to change it for each language, just for the entire board.

I'm not sure what you mean, but 'translate' in this case doesn't necessarily mean to a different language, it's just what the Phrase Manager calls it when you want to change a phrase.

It looks like I can edit the "Phrases"inside the AdminCP. Is this right?

I didn't realize what you were saying until I found the phrase manager. I was confused :-)

So I should be able to change the text inside the phrases and it will work?

I think if you have your site in debug mode you *can* change the 'master language', but you can also just provide a translation. I guess the difference is that if you edit the 'master language' phrases you can't go back to the original (unless you reload the language xml), whereas if you provide a translation you can just delete it later to go back.

Ok thanks, that is what I will do.

So in VB4 it looks like you can have "contacts" and "friends". Is it possible to delete one of those options, so they only have "friends"? I need a way for someone to invite someone to be their "buddy", but it sends that user an email and requires them to "accept" Which of the 'friends' or 'contacts' would that be?

Thanks for all of your help so far!

I believe the way it works is that you can add anyone you want to your contact list, but they have to accept your request before they become a friend.

Thanks for your help, I figured it out! Changing phrases made it super easy. Im still looking around though for the random straggler phrases I missed.
