Will VB4 help control spammers
 

I am adminning a site for a friend. He is on 3.8.4 and we are getting killed on spammers. I have added IP's to block and moderate all the new members...but this is getting old.

I want to get him up to 4.x.x. I have 4.x.x and I don't have any spammers.

Will this upgrade ease the volume of them?

vBulletin does have a free anti-spam system (built in) that allows you to tap into the anti-spam database of akismet.com and antispam.typepad.com

Further there are some free 3rd party modifications which plug into the ant-spam databases of StopForumSpam.com and projecthoneypot.org and spamhaus.org

vBulletin also have build in captcha options (including Q & A human verification) and a lot of free 3rd party options for captcha.

So yes, vBulletin 4 can help restrict spammers.

I just was not sure if it was that impactful.

Truthfully there isn't much VB4 can do to stop spam that you can't do in VB 3.8.

Both have Question and Answer verification which by far helps cut down on the automated spammers.

Both have 3rd party anti-spam mods you can download from here for free as well.

That was my question. It seems, based on the responses, that it could help but not necessary.

There is nothing built into VB4 that VB 3.8 doesn't have to control spam.

Much simpler, better targeted solution:

IsBot - Registration time check

No anti-spam subscription keys necessary, no complicated install. 90% of spam out there is generated by botnet zombie computers. The entire point of spambots is speed, therefore they only spend an average of 3 seconds on the register.php page. This mod stops any registration that takes less than 15 seconds, never bothers a human.

This combined with any of vBulletin's built-in human verification measures makes your board Ft. Knox to spam. Since my install of this I have had zero spammers, out of more than 5,000 tries - and never interfering or inconveniencing a single human.

I would be happy to install and configure this for you.

ISbot and vb bad behavior work great in combination with stopforumspam or spam-o-matic.

This stops most of the spammers on my high traffic big board. (vb3.8)
