Strange users auto-registering

I made it so that every new registration to my forum is moderated and has to be approved yet some are getting through and registering themselves. The new users have weird user names and email addresses so they are probably bots using sql injection. they also don't show up on the actual forum under community - member list, they only show up in the control panel and the mysql database. What can I do about this?

If you can only see them in the database and control panel, are you sure they're not "Users Awaiting Moderation"? Are they in usergroup id 4?

No. There are some that show up to be moderated and i delete/reject them. However there are others that make it through without even showing up to be moderated.

actually there is one that registered just now with usergroup id 3 and never showed up to be moderated/approved.

That's "Awaiting Email Confirmation". I guess they don't go to be moderated until the email has been confirmed.

Thanks. I don't know why i didn't think of that before. So basically they are registering with fake emails and not confirming the email address and just sitting in the database forever unless I delete them. Or can you set the "Users Awaiting Email Confirmation" to be automatically deleted after a certain number of days?

There are mods that will do that. But you've made a few bad assumptions early on. Chances are these are not bots, but real people. And they are not using some esoteric method like SQL injection.

Welcome to 2012.
