A programmer working on my style managed to mess it up someone - he managed to remove the .css file so my site is now completely sty less if you will.

I take weekly backups of the whole site and database - would i be able to restore the .css file or style options without restoring the whole site to a week ago?

or do i just cut my loses and get it all re done?

What css file was that? What you can do is, set up a test forum, restore your most recent backup and take from there the deleted file and paste it to that of the live forum. Or you could export the whole custom theme from the test forum and install it at your live one.

Really? You should feel fortunate he actually did something...even if it was wrong. It shows he at least made an effort.

That's the most civil (allowable on the site) advice I can offer on developers.

Well Yes and No..........Firstly we do not know if this person here paid the developer to perform the work on his site having been under the impression that the developer stated he knew how to do it.

Secondly this person here never publicly put the developers name so he was at least professional how he presented this issue.

Lastly imagine being this guy not knowing "I assume" how to fix the issue that has now happened and his forum members going nuts because the site is a wreck thus ultimately facing the possibility of losing loads of members. However there are also developers here who say they can perform tasks that you request and really have no clue what you are trying to get done let alone the fact they have no clue to do what you want. This is exactly why vbulletin.org's staff specifically tell you to be cautious and do background checks on potential developers to be hired.

Do not get me wrong here I think developers on here are awesome some offer free services and are great at what they do as far as support goes and the same can be said for those who get paid for their services.

Hmmm...a member since 2006 with over 700 posts, hardly seems the type.

Now me on the other hand...I've been a building contractor for 30 years and know when a bid is too low. Low bids usually include paying the original price, paying someone to undo the wrong work and then paying someone to do it right. This scenario directly relates to almost all applications of/in practical life.

The thread title suggests he wanted everyone's opinion. I'd really like to change mine. It seems to me the legitimate developers would almost welcome some type of standard in the industry that would help prevent unqualified people from taking advantage of people like me. Perhaps a licensing system like the construction industry has in place.
