Help with updating style

Hello
I downloaded a style, installed it, and changed a few colors in the template and other areas.
But then an upgrade for the style came out. Now if install the new update, it erases my changes I made. What is the proper way to update a style without overwriting any previous changes?

Document the changes you made, then reapply the changes after upgrading the style.
