Troll Problem
 

Hi Folks,
I've got a problem on my forum where a troll is registering anywhere from 5-20 new names a day. Sometimes more. The usernames are always something obnoxious. The problem is this guy is using a proxy server and a different IP address every single time he visits the site.

He always uses a fake email address so I know who it is. My mod team and I think that that since he can't post, etc. as I've turned just about everything off for the usergroup "waiting for email confirmation" it appears he is getting his kicks from being listed in the "new members" section as well as the "who's online" as new registrations even if not approved show up in the who's online list. I've turned off the "new members registered today" mod, but the who's online thing is a problem.

I need to find a way to only list new registrations in the who's online that are approved. If I can do that I think this guy will take his ball and go play somewhere else. Any one know of a hack, mod, etc. or a way to solve this problem?

the last one is good as it will let you ban his host so does not matter if he changes his ip
the first one is good as i am sure he is on the spam list the 2nd one install if you wish but not really needed

Thank you for the links. I already have the first one installed but didn't know about the other ones. The problem with this is that it is not a bot, it is a person deliberately spending time to signup with different names and showing up on the who's online list. It would be great if VB didn't list people on the who's online until they are approved and in the registered user group. For example, we had a forum member pass away and this guy is registering with their name and some profanity laced nonsense. Yep, it's that bad. He gets his kicks out of showing up on the who's online even though he is not approved to post.

Hopefully a member of the development team will see this and see how open and vulnerable this leaves the VB community. Thanks for the links. :-)
