what should I pay to a webmaster for my forum

Hello all,

I know that what type of work has to have bearing on how much is earned. I have some pretty simple stuff to start, like setting up a backup2mail for my database, installing vbseo upgrade on my server... What should I expect to pay someone for this?

Thanks!

There is no set price for things like that. Everyone charges different rates for their work.

I have a guy that I use every so often to do things that I can't do on my server. I pay him $100/hour (although he always discounts me to $80). I only use him for about two hours a year.

I could do the same for $10/hour, but will probably need 30 hours to do the same. ;)

Yeah, that's the thing! He is very good at what he does and I know he won't mess up. He has done server moves for me that are seemless - no one knows we moved (except me)! He just knows his stuff.... and he's my son's age! :D

^ That's the thing, I always compare online work to automotive work because everyone knows that a mechanic's rate varies and is dependent upon many things... if he's good but no shop = less $$$ however if it's at a shop well now your paying for part of his overhead which = more $$$ and there's also many other factors involved or some of you would prefer to call them variables :p but long story short and point being - You must make a well-informed decision before hiring someone to do work for you! Also, just to be clear, imo there are some talented individuals out there and sometimes in other countries making them more affordable at that... this is where the issue of trust comes into play, if you trust in someone you may find a very affordable coder who values morals and ethics - just because someone has a company or flashy/fancy website does not warrant any form of guarantee and I'm sure many of you can vouch for that however not trying to derail the thread and steer any of you into a ranting tangent within this thread simply saying that sometimes, giving someone the benefit of the doubt can pay off in your favor .

Its only worth what your willing to pay. You can find anyone to do jobs online for $5-10 for hours of work, but like everything else you're going to end up with what you pay for one of the times.

Thank you everyone for the input. I wasn't sure if there was a 'standard' rate and the replies here let me understand that it can range pretty widely.

I just paid a guy on here a 100 bucks for a couple hours of graphic work he did for me. He seemed very happy that the request started out free and then I changed my mind several times and he ended up with a 100 bucks. The good thing is that he made a couple of changes after that and charged me nothing.

I think hundred dollars is fair enough.
