Need plug in to delete user name, delete sig file, but keep all posts.

Some members contact me to remove all their threads and posts and their membership.

I don't want to lose all their contribution and I think my Terms of Use support keeping the posts.

But I want to lose the user name (perhaps something better than 'guest') and lose the signature file.

Any plug ins for this?

Any thoughts on this practice?

Thanks in advance,

You could create a new user with whatever user name you want, then use "Merge Users" to merge the old user to the new one (merging will assign all threads and posts to the new user. The old user will be deleted, so be careful - you may want to do a backup first).

cool tip thanks,

Will the new registration override the old one on Avatar and sig file?

By coincidnece someone else was just asking about merge, so I happen to know offhand (and it tells you on the merge page) that merging copies over "Posts, threads, calendar events, private messages, post count, reputation, contacts, friends and ignore list" from the old user to the new user. Anything else comes from the new user you create, so I think the answer is yes.

Edit: Something else occured to me - I guess I was thinking about "merge" because of that other thread, but really you could just change the username, password, and email address on the existing user, then log in and remove the sig and avatar and anything else you want. I guess merging to a new user really doesn't achieve anything else except to give the user a different userid.

All good tips. Many thanks!:D

Now away from the technical - what do (or anyone else) think of this practice practically and ethically?
