My WTF News of the evening lol

I was on break at work this evening and noticed something in the paper that caught my eye. Well, actually, four words caught my eye. "Justin" "Timberlake" "Myspace" "Future". Immediately, I didn't really know what else to think other than "wtf?" lol. So, got home and did a Google search and found this:

Quote:

Justin Timberlake To Take Ownership Stake in MySpace

Today, we learned MySpace had been sold for $35 million to an advertising network called Specific Media. Now, the company says singer Justin Timberlake will take an ownership stake in MySpace and play a role in its future.

According to MySpace, we should know more about Specific Media?s and Timberlake?s vision for the the company later this summer.

?There?s a need for a place where fans can go to interact with their favorite entertainers, listen to music, watch videos, share and discover cool stuff and just connect. MySpace has the potential to be that place,? Timberlake said in a statement. ?Art is inspired by people and vice versa, so there?s a natural social component to entertainment.?

Timberlake and Specific Media plan on focusing the site on entertainment, aiming to make it the place to go for original shows, videos and music. They also plan on launching ?socially-activated advertising campaigns,? according to the statement, which would let users share their favorite ads with friends.

We?ll have more when we hear it.

Thoughts? lol

(I see Myspace becoming more and more unpopular :p)

I thought myspace was already unpopular. Is it still used much? It seems facebook came in and kinda took over the social networking scene.

MySpace has been history for a while now. That is why they only got 35 million for it.

Why in the heck would you want to buy a "has been" company, that has no foreseeable future? That's almost like a new software company starting up and thinking that they are gonna compete heavily with Microsoft. lol Oh well, I wish him well, but to me that just seems like a sucker investment.

As to completely rebrand the concept whilst still having a very recognizeable name that comes with a database of 1,000,000+ users...?

May have 1,000,000 members, but how many of those are still active? It would totally have to be rebuilt and re-branded to revive it and give it something to set it apart from Facebook. Right now they are just trying to keep up with Facebook lol

rebuild and re-branded is key.
This article (specifically Timberlakes comments) make me believe that the purpose is not at all to follow in facebook's footsteps, but to rebrand myspace as some sort of artist space of some sort. It'll be interesting to see it take shape. If I had a stake in it - I'd have more than a few ideas to revive it ((sigh...))

You never know, my-space can beat face book.
