show today's date

Hi,
I was wondering how to display "today" date on vdadvanced template.

do I create a php file and upload as a plugin with preregister vbadvanced template?

is there a global build in vb variable {vb:raw xxxxx }?

I checked "superman" post on show date. However, I can't get it to display on "header" template
