Spam Out of Control :-@

Spam on the board is going out of control... will you imagine i have banned 27 members in 10 minutes.... all of my time is wasted controlling the spam...

i have tried Q&A and reCaptcha but nothing is working even that i have activated the verify mail option but nothing works

i will surely hit my head into the wall if this will keep on going...

I use the image captcha with vBulletin combined with the No Spam mod here on the org. Plus, make sure that you have multiple questions that do not include the answer within them.

But, if you're getting hit with human spam then it's going to be tougher to deal with.

I also ban IP addresses in certain countries (Russia, for example) since most of my sites wouldn't have much interest there anyways.

How many Q&A do you have? Make sure you have 5 at least. be sure they are not simple, make them like:
"Spell this word correctly: CLOWD"
or,

"_ _ _ _ _ and Juliet"

And create another set of 5, and swap them out when you think the first set is no longer effective. Q&A will keep out bots, but human spammers can answer them and then feed the answer to the bots.

Make darn sure you don't have 5000 spammer accounts camped out in your memberlist, that draws spammers like frsh meat.

We use the vB Q&A and NoSpam! Q&A, we don't bother with capcthcha :)

Where in the admin panel can you do this?

ACP>VBulletin Options>Human Verification Options

And add the NoSpam! Mod to make the second level of Q&A. Then you find that in ACP>VBulletin Options>VBulletin Options>NoSpam! Settings

Thanks for your help.

My pleasure.

Not sure about the version of NoSpam! I am using, I think it actually may be this version:

Sure would help if mods stopped using generic numbers like 3.0 for 3.7, 4.0 for 3.8, etc :) Maybe something like v25.1 would be a lot easier to keep straight.

I have resorted to moderating new registrations. I believe it is worth the effort because spam can be damaging, resulting in hard won registered users leaving your forum. So if I am in any doubt about the details of the new registrant I reject the registration.

I suspect they are all human spammers because I have nospam questions that no bot could answer. They often make a first post that is meaningful and vaguels on topic, then they go back and edit the post and insert a link. So if you are monitoring new posts by email you won't notice it. The spammers are usually from the Phillipines, Pakistan or India and I suspect they are in the SEO business.

I have now also started blocking IPs. I use http://software77.net/geo-ip/ to check the IP location. If it's located in a country that I have no interest in getting traffic from I just block the whole CIDR :)
