Faster way of uploading via FTP? (CoreFTP & GlobalGold)
 

Not sure if anyone knows a solutions to this or not, but for those of you who have GlobalGold Hosting or something similar, is there a faster way of uploading files via FTP or another way (other than FTP)?

At the moment, I'm using CoreFTP, which is what was suggested to me by GlobalGold, but it uploads files 1 by 1 after I queue everything up, whereas, with my previous host (HostGator), I was able to use FileZilla and able to transfer up to 10 files at a time. It currently takes me about 4-5 hours (probably because I'm on a somewhat slow connection) to upload all vBulletin files.

I spotted something in another thread the other day, when someone was explaining how they usually upgrade their board, that they would upload the entire .zip file and extract it via SSH. I have yet to try this. Anyone else tried anything similar? Or know of a faster way to get files uploaded?

You will get a faster upload / download with 1 large file vs. 1000's of small ones. Works the same on local LAN / WAN also.
- I did 510,000 files in 4-6 hours, but (1) 12 gig zip file in 10 min and 4-5 min to unzip

The big speed problem w/ many files is the need to - read / write / verify - every file.
This causes a delay and adds up.
- start, stop, verify
- start, stop, verify

Yeah, I have been working at a college preparatory school (9th-12th) this last year as a service technician in one of their IT departments. It's a blast with lots to do. Everyday is a new problem to solve or procedure to improve w/ full service parts and software. (roughly 1700 users on a wi-fi campus)

I also volunteer a lot in community events as well and shoot a lot of photos.

Here's what I do when I upgrade...

Assuming I have already unzipped and extracted the vBulletin files on my local hard drive.

1) Browse to the upload folder (open it)

2) Select All Files and Folders

3) Using a zip program such as 7zip, Add All Files to a New Zip File (upload.zip)

4) Upload upload.zip to my forum root directory on my host (via FTP)

5) Using cpanel file manager browse to upload.zip and extract all files to the directory it is in. It will automatically replace all existing files if there are new ones in the zip.

6) Delete upload.zip

7) Run upgrade script, proceed as normal.

It's much faster to upload 1 zip than thousands of small files and the unzipping process on the server is ultra-fast.

Unless you use cuteftp. It can handle up to 100 connections (100 files at a time) and it uploads anything super fast.

Figured I'd post an update. Today, I completely removed my test site (database, files, everything) and basically made a mirror of my live site to upload to my test site.

1. Downloaded all files/folders
2. Compressed all files/folders and uploaded via CoreFTP to /testvb/
3. Extracted files/folders via SSH
4. Went into my vBulletin Settings in my AdminCP of my live site and changed "Site Name / URL / Contact Details" to reflect the URL of my test site
5. Made a backup of the live database via SSH
6. Imported the backed up database to the database for the test site via SSH

And voila! DEFINATELY went a lot faster than the way I WAS doing it lol. Thanks again for all of the suggestions!
