human verification is not working

We've had to deal with a lot of spam registrations recently. Kept checking the settings, all the boxes were ticked in the right places. One of the new members pointed out yesterday that he wasn't prompted to type in what was on the picture or similar at the time of registration. Tested it and found that image verification, Q&A verification or reCAPTCHA verification do not work at the point of registration. Checked all the settings in the adminCP, changed settings to alternative ones (cycled through 3 kinds of verifications), still no change at registration. We definitely had it working up until several weeks ago, but can't pinpoint when things changed. We upgraded the forum in April, might have happened then.

Any help would be appreciated. The forum runs on 4.1.3.
Thanks.

Did you make any changes to your web server recently ? or if you're using a web hosting, ask them if they made any changes to the php settings recently.

Because I remember I had an issue with reCAPTCHA long time ago on another forum i had, and when i had to move to another server I reinstalled the web server and it was working.

We didn't make any changs to our server and no changes were made to php settings. It is not just a problem with reCAPTCA, it is a global problem with human verification function.

Have you tried enabling human verification for other functions (as a test)? If you have facebook enabled it will bypass hv on registration, but I can't see any other way it would.

It is enabled for registration, contact us, lost password and, as we've just tested, it doesn't work for any of them.

 It definitely did use to work couple of months ago for all these functions. Need to sort it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

ehmm... it's pretty wierd but you can try this:

go to AdminCP > Settings > Options > Plugin/Hook System: and disable it.

test if the captcha is working, if it's working, then it's a modification that it's causing the problem.

We only use skimlinks, but anyway nothing changed when plugins were disabled. Lost for further actions.

Create a new style with no parent:
  • Styles & Templates > Style Manager > Add New Style
  • Parent Style: No Parent Style
  • Title: Default vBulletin
  • Allow User Selection: Yes
  • Save
Set this style as the default style on your site and now try to register - do you still have the same problem?

Tried this. It doesn't create new style, even though we've tried to rename it different names, tried to choose a different style as default and then create a new style. What it does, it updates the existing default style. HV doesn't get activated.

We're going to update to 4.1.4 tonight and see what happens.

Updated the forum version. Nothing has changed. Any help would be appreciated, including suggestions on how to raise this issue with vbulletin.com

Any more suggestions?
