Sign Up User groups

I have been looking for the answer or solution to this for some time but cant seem to find it or in fact know if its possible so here goes...

I want some sign up options... basically something like where the user can choose their own usergroup on sign up??

So for my situation I have a forum.... I want members to sign up but I also want the general public to sign up. But the problem lies where I want the public to only see some things and vice versa...

So basically i want on the sign up process for them to select whether they are group A or group b or in fact group c.....

Is this possible? HOw easy is it to do?

I've not aware of anything like that. But since staff would have to verify they were really a member, not just claiming to be one, it's not really their choice anyway. Staff would also have to manually periodically check the records and make sure they're still members, as well as manually changing new existing members.
