calendar events searchable?

Im looking for help or even bump in the right direction on a project I am working on..

I need my calendar to be searchable by distance..

this is my goal with it..

So lets say there is an event on 5-21-11 that is in tany given area code

I need to be able to search within X amount of miles of my area code.. .. and it will search the calendar for all the events within that distance..

So not only do I need a search system that works by distance..
but also a feild in the calendar that you imput the area code that the event is taking place in.

does that make sense?

any help would be AWSOME.

Do you really mean area code? I've heard of it being done with zip codes. You can find a database of zipcode coordinates (centroids) and in theory it's not too hard to calculate the distance to each one. I'm not sure if it would work as well with area codes since the areas are much larger. I also googled and didn't find anything like an area code location database, but of course that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

yea sorry about that Kh99... I was meaning zip code..

I was working on this lastnight for awhile..
I actually think I need to figure something out instead of doing it with calendar events..

Im thinking if I can just save the events (with a zip code tag and date somehow) .. then I would just need to work in a search system to search the database of events by zip code (and date)

any ideas on that?

Yeah, it seems to me that figuring out how to have an interface for managing the events is more difficult than the search. In fact I found this page: http://blogs.lessthandot.com/index.p...e-longitude-pr that pretty much says how to do the search.

I'm not familiar at all with the calendar stuff but maybe I'll look at it later.

thanks.. Ive been searching around pretty heavily trying to find some good solid imput..
have a few leads as well.

Im not the strongest coder though :D

but I do like the link you provided.. will have to give it a good read in a min here..

I noticed looking at that link again that it's specifically "SQL Server" , so I don't know how much of it will work with MySQL.
