Forum Sidebar Group Discussions Display

I started this over at vB.com and they sent me here...

I have the latest two group discussions in the forum sidebar, which is a great way to keep people appraised of that feature. One member has asked me if it would be possible to have that sidebar only display recent discussions from groups he is subscribed to. Is this possible? If not, is there already such a feature request?

vB.com says I will have to write custom PHP, so I guess my real question is if anyone has already done this. I am OK with PHP but haven't used it in a while, programming is not my calling.

Anyone? Pretty please? I don't even know where to start. I have done no PHP work within vB.

If you put it there as a way to get people interested in thr groups discussion feature...making it so you can only see the ones you are subscribed to would prevent anyone not in a group from seeing discussions...and in essence removing the reason you put it there to begin with.

Just something to think about, sadly I can't help much with the programming of what you are asking for.

Hmm... very good point. I don't know if it would be possible to program it so that if you're not subscribed to any groups it shows you all of them... and then again any users who want to continue to see all the group discussions will be unable to if they join a group. This would have to be a user-level setting, which I don't think is possible

You can set per group if discussions are publicly visible or not.

The main reason why I would like such sidebar widget is to make users aware of the latest group discussions from the groups they are member of. The biggest issue with groups is that no one sees discussions unless explicitly checking if there is anything new in those groups.

Showing group discussions from public groups, that the user is not a member in can indeed stimulate the user to join those groups as well.

I'd like to have both sidebar widgets: 'Discussions in your groups' and 'Latest Group discussions'.

Thinking about it, having the mod made the way you originally posed it...and simply making all new members part of a default group could work as well.
