installing the patch

I am running 4.0.8 PL 2. I see there is an update. How do I install this? There are no instructions. I tried overwriting with the new files and the board broke. I got a database error. Isn't there a simpler way to take care of this? WP plug ins, for example, have a simple link that says 'update software'. You click it and you're done.
