UserGroup for a period of time.
 
I don't know what this would be called, I know it isn't the "payments"

But is there a script/hack to place a user in a group for a period of time?

I really don't know of any hack that does this... as you mention it does sound like something that can me accomplished via a subscription but you can't have a 'free' subscription. You could have a paid subscription and then manually add people to the subscription, a situation described here:
