How to reduce CMS front page article preview size

right now, there is too much white space, which stylevar should I adjust to reduce each preview article's size (I assume only height should be lowered, and keep width the same)?

also, is there anyway to automatically adjust each preview article's attached image's size to the new preview article's size?
