Forum categories and sub-category display

I'm using VB V4.1 and trying to find the best way to display links for my subcategories in their main category on the forums page.

For example, I have a forum named "Pacific NorthWest" acting as a category and I'd like to have the sub-forums, "General Discussions", "Trails and Events", "4X4 Clubs", "Shops and Businesses", and "Classifieds" be both easily linked to from the forum category AND have the thread and post counts registered at the forum home so visitors/members can see the most recent content.

I've searched for settings in the forum manager area of the admincp but have found no way to do it. I went ahead and posted links using html in the description of the category but that only half solves my problem; doesn't display thread and post counts; and doesn't look all that great either. I'm sure theres an easier way of doing this than coding it and have seen it done in other VB forums. Any suggestions/advice?

I figured part of it out, I set the forums that had previously been categories, i.e. "Pacific North West" to enable forum (had been set as category) but kept the other setting to disallow new posts. This way posts from the sub-forums show up as a thread and post count in the PNW forum. I made an HTML list of links for the subforums and put it in the description. The only problem with this is that the description also shows up with the links when I go to the category/forum and sets the sub-forums slightly further down the page. Anyone know a more stylish way of presenting the sub-forum links below the parent forum/description area?
