super mods and admins cannot search in private forum
 
but to me it seems like they should be able to do so...

other private forums do not have this problem...

In the forum manager there's an "Index New Posts in Search Engine" option, maybe that's turned off?

You'll need to rebuild the search index (maintenance > update counters) in order to get the threads/posts in the forum indexed if you change that setting.
