3.8 to 4.0.8 installastion?

We currently run 3.8, we wanna install to 4.0.8. We are alittle scared to cause my buddy installed it from 3.8 to 4.0.8 and yet has gotten his site back up...

We don't wanna lose any of our work or 900 members. Is there a trick to upgrading to 4.0.8?

I mean we've easily installed 3.6 to 3.7 to 3.8 with no problems. I also read somewhere we should have all mods turned off when installing 4.0?

any feedback would be great?

Do not do this, please.

Continue on version 3.8 which is the best thing you do. If I could turn back time, would not have made the mistake of having upgraded my forum to vB4.x which is extremely HORRIBLE.

Try it on a test site first. I've tried it on my test site and didn't have any problems but I hear about others having problems quite a bit because of modifications.

I installed my 4.08 in a different directory, a completely blank install with a blank DB. I then copied the post, thread, user etc tables from my VB3 db into my VB4 db after checking that the structure was the same. For tables that had a different field or structure, I would copy to an interim db, make the changes then copy to my CVB4 db and so on.
Once it was up and running with all posts PMs and forums etc, I changed the names on the install folder, reset the settings in ACP and all was good.
This is obviously a simplified version of all that had to be done, but if you have heavily modified templates and addons in a VB3 it's the best way to do it in my book. The whole thing took a solid 4 hours, but you are not working on a live site, you dont have to upload large amounts of data as the db table copies in MYSQL are done in a flash.
VB4 has a great style modification system, so changing the look of your site is done in a flash. Most of the good VB3 mods have been rewritten for VB4 so you get those installed pretty fast and your site is going in less than a day!!

In the end do u think 4.0 is better then 3.8? other then the hassle u had upgrading are u happy running 4.0 now OR you still wish u had 3.8?

thanks for everyone feedback so far

Hi

I did upgrade form 3.8.1 to 4.0.7 . Everything went Ok exept from the fact that i had to disable all of the plugins and addons and reinstall again for version 4 x

The second issue is that when i did the transfer , all of my attachements were left in the data base and did not tranfers.
I was not the only one who had this issue, aply for help and still nobody was kiind to help to sirt out this.

On the other hand 4.x vesrion is better than 3x
