How to extend header colors to 100%?

Anyone know how I would extend my header background to 100% width without affecting the rest?

I changed doc_maxWidth to "1000px" and centered it setting doc_margin left and right to "auto".

I want to keep the contents of the header aligned with doc_maxWidth, but want to extend the background colors to 100%, similar in appearance to facebook, digg, or twitter.
