vb.org Archive - Accessing thumbnail of first attachment in CMPS and Thread Listings

I have set up a Classifieds section on my forum, and I'd like to allow people to create a thumbnail picture with their listing. The attachment system is perfect for this, but I don't know how to implement it.

Down the left side of my forum, I use the CMPS "News Archives" module to show the listings in the Classifieds forum.

What I'd like to do, is alter the adv_portal_archivebits_lean template in such a way that it shows a thumbnail of the FIRST attachment of that post.

I've tried hacking together pieces of other templates that call the thumbnail pics, but I must be missing some reference somewhere because it doesn't work the way I was wanting it to. I am not very advanced with vBulletin's programming so it's probably something very simple and obvious to someone more experienced.

Can anyone help me achieve this?
