Preparing to upgrade to vB4 - the best solution !??

I currently am running a 3.7.x version in one of the sites we're thinking about finally upgrading to vB4 Publishing Suite.
I am looking for helpful suggestions and I hope you have some time to provide them. Although from most reviews I read, it looks like it's not really worth to upgrade, and better stay on latest vB 3.8.x I wanted to ask what do you believe is the best way to transition our board to latest vB4 version.

I have read many online resources from vb.com so we want to do this with minimum impact on our high traffic site.

I am considering two ways to do this:
  1. First option which I think is more reliable, is to install a fresh vB4 and import everything through Impex. I've done this on a test environment and except avatars and profile pictures, everything else, imported without problems.
  2. Second option is to start the upgrade process from my vB 3.7 all the way up to latest vB4. I didn't try this so I have no idea if this is stable enough.
Long story short, can you guys please share how did you deal with this and what would you prefer for me to move ahead.

Thanks.

In my opinion would be best to go with the second option. i.e. via running the upgrader rather than the impex. And don''t forget to make a thorough backup of your db first. To play it really safe, make first a duplicate of your live forum at a test forum and upgrade that first to see how things will go.

Go with the upgrades... this way if something breaks, you can get official support from the vb team.
