Limit text in the Recent Thread Widget

Hello,

I recently implemented the Recent Threads widget. However, all I really want displayed is the Title and maybe one line of text instead of multiple lines as it does by default.

Is there a way to do this or another widget that works and doesn't show threads to forums users don't have permissions to. (I tried a custom one and it didn't work.)
