But what is with the bold part? Its the exact same link and even if it was different why does there need to be a separate one for American users? basically what is the purpose of it? and is there anyway to remove the pointless HTML tags?

You can edit the phrase in Admincp->Phrases. Simply copy a few words of the text and search for the phrase, then edit it in the English box. I do believe the phrasename is 'welcome_email_body' or something like that.

Because AOL is a totally different beast to other browsers, and presumably doesn't allow for link clicking.

Also, having your URL as 'Forum' is a Bad Idea. 'forum' would be far less likely to cause issues.
