Are Shoutcast radios illegal?

My friend bought a Shoutcast server for me to use. So I connect via Winamp, and can stream music and talk online, and be broadcasted.

Is that illegal? All of my music that I have were bought (CDs, and iTunes). Also, with other DJs, as long as all music is legal, is it okay? I know thousands of online radios, so I think it would be okay.

I am no expert on this, but even if you own the CD that doesn't allow you to play it outside your private environment (ie. play in a bar/radio/transmit over the internet) i think.

But i think your question is best ot be asked on a site that specializes in music and copyright.

Hmm.. I did ask a few people who are very knowledgable with the music industry (after I asked here), and they said it was legal. I was just asking here incase someone here knew more about it.

Anyone ever heard of "Habbo" or "Runescape"? There are hundreds of fansites, with radios, and they're all "official" fansites. So if Sulake and Jagex (companies who own Habbo and Runescape) chose them to be official, obviously it would have to be legal. Or am I wrong?

It is Legal until you start Sharing them online . There shouldnt be problem on Streaming on Online Media only.

They are most likely paying.

In order to play music online (legally) with shoutcast radio, as a public option, you must pay fees for the musicians / creators of the music pieces. This is how they make money off of radios. At least, that's what I've learnt. Fear.fm closed not too long ago because of insufficient funds to do this (I think that's the website)

Shoutcast Radio are not illegal. I'm a moderator of a Remix forum where there's a shoutcast radio. The site would have been taken down if it was illegal.

Ofcourse it is not illegal, as long as you pay the royalties.

Hey, i run Lazy Records. Online broadcasting hosts such as Shoutcast will pay towards firms ensuring no responsibilities are shared to them, but also keeping client confidentiality. Broadcasting at bars and clubs require a license and (if approached) would have to produce legal copies or receipts of the music he is using. So dont worry, you are fine to play your music on shoutcast :p
