I'm kind of new at this also. I think what you may be looking for is located at ;

control panel > Usergroups > Post / Thread Permissions & Forum Viewing Permissions

If you set them up there it may accomplish what you need it to. Hope this helps,

Yes go to what Marty has directed to and set "can view others' threads" to NO
