Why avatar images are converted to .gif?

In the forum settings I enabled the custom profile images that users upload to be saved to the hard disk (instead of the Database?!), but once they are uploaded they are converted to ".gif" format.

Can I override that option, since the image complies with the default limitations (size and dimensions) I want to be left as is (or converted to jpg).

I've posted the same question in vbulleting.com but noone bothered to answer me :(
