Changing Status Icon Extension

Using 3.8.4

I want to use my own icons for new posts as compared to the ones that came with the styles but when i try making them (being a .gif) I seem to be restricted in the amount of colors I can use. Can I make the icons as jpgs and change something in the template to point to statusicon/forum_old.jpg instead of statusicon/forum_old.gif

You can always try renaming the .jpg to .gif, that will often work.
