Getting total posts on every page

I am trying to show the total number of posts in the forum on every page.

I have plugged the code from the bottom of index.php into global_start, and this works everywhere except showthread.php where it just shows the number of posts in that thread rather than the entire site.

I have tried changing the variables so it doesn't use $forum in case it was clashing with anything, but this hasn't solved the problem.

Any idea how I can prevent this from happening?
