how to check if a user is loged in?

I'm using freechat,and know i wan't to check if someone is loged in if not this person should get a message that he has to be a registerd user. he also has to be loged in.

How can i do this, or where could i find more information about this.

when logged in, it would also be nice that free chat uses the forum login name as chat name.

I think there's a $loggedin variable.
