Modifying Category Tree

Hello,
I have quite a few forums with 3-4 depths. The category map up at the top can be confusing and if visitors click on the wrong link at the top of the page, they can get lost. Is there a way to adjust what depths of forums are displayed at the top of the forum pages? Where can one find the code to modify if needed?
