Pulling thread info form URL ($thread)

Im hoping this is something fairly simple to do but maybe its not either way Im having a bit of trouble.

I decided to let users pick a favorite thread, they enter their threads URL by entering the thread number and it creates a link to the thread. Right now though I also have them enter the title for their thread which Im hoping they dont need to do.

Is there a way to access a threads $thread information if I know the threads URL?
