Looks like subforum icons.

Perhaps, give us all the link to the originators site, so we can get the "bigger picture"

We use forum icons for new post and old post and also sub forum icons, on our forums

when i install this hack it does't work plus it aint for 3.8 its for 3.5

It looks like a template with custom sub-forum icons. Accomplishable from the admin CP by using prefixes on your forum_old.gif etc.
