Seperating Forums

Is there an easy way to seperate the forums on my main page? Also on some sites I see the main page has some articles, maybe the profile. All organized in sections. Is this a hack? If so what is it called?

Well my problem was how I was definign the forums. as catagory or forum!

Still would like to know about the main page thing though. Any help would be appreciated
