'Must Have' hacks?

I just got set up having ported over my old forum to vB3.8.1 - how do I get the Post New Thread box like this one set up (or other alternatives)? At the moment, my users have no editor to add bold, italics or smilies.

Also, is there a list of what are considered to be 'Must Have' hacks for a reasonably large social network forum?

Any ideas or suggestions would be more than appreciated.

1. You choose the WYSIWYG editor as your default in your User CP. You can set it as the default for new users in vboptions > registration options

2. Every site is different and what may be a must have to me (a tracker) is not a must have to you. But, there have been threads about mods that forum owners find indispensable - you can just do a search for them.

Thanks for that Lynne, I just did s you said and it works when I go to my user CP and allow the WSWIG editor. Is there anyway I can set this as the default setting for all users so they don't have to go in and fiddle with their own CP's?
Thanks again!

maintenance > SQL Query > Show WYSIWYG (from dropdown)

Make sure you entered your userid into the config.php file as a user allowed to run queries.

Very nice list thanks for the post! Plenty of things in there I'd like to install, some of them are 3.7 hacks though - are there any issues in using these in 3.8.1?
