I need to send 60,000 emails

Hi,

Like the title says, I need to send 60,000 emails! We are re-releasing our website and want to send a small text file to users of the forum. I just tried with the build in vbulletin mailer and after sending 6000 emails in a matter of sends my website was suspended and I got a very angry email from the hosting company.

They said I can send a maximum of 600 emails per hour. Is there a batch web / desktop application that will allow me to batch send emails from a generated mailing list. Preferably free.

Regards,

James

Hi James

I've come accross this one, which is freeware, and allows you to send personalised e-mails to a list of recipients from any database or excel file. High-speed and easy to use e-mail marketing tool. Sends messages in plain text format or HTML.

Hope that helps, let us know how you got on ;)

I would definitely use PHPList, because that allows you to manage the massive amount of bounces you are about to receive. Please read the article in my signature on email bounces and how that can get you banned with email providers.

There are 2 PHPlist integration hacks available: free and commercial.

Your ISP will probably be upset if you send 60,000 emails from their system as well. You would probably want to use something like mailchimp.com or another professional email system. It won't be free but it won't exactly break the wallet either. Mailchimp.com links to their competitors on the page that explains if Mailchimp is right for you.

Move hosting companies. I send 70,000 emails several times a day no problems from my hosting company. Keep in mind these are emails to people that have opted in to my list to receive event notifications and a removal link is at the bottom of all my emails.

I use phplist as well.

For future reference, Email Aces and Aweber are low cost solutions. Not free though. Aweber is the industry standard and the one that I use for all my mailing lists.

You can also use this to spread them out from within vb.

Don't waste your time with a) vBulletin's mass mailer and b) Some dodgy exe program :)

I remember doing some work on a forum with around 10k members about a year ago, and we had a nightmare trying to send emails out to our members letting them know that the site was under new ownership and had new a new design/forums etc. The main problem is that hotmail, gmail, yahoo were all flagging the emails as spam and they never reached the user's inbox.

The first thing you should consider is if you're running a shared host. If you are, then you have little chance of getting your IP address whitelisted as a safe sender as other people on your IP can abuse it. Secondly, if your IP address falls within a range where there are other bad servers (perhaps your host has, in the past, provided dedicated boxes to people who have abused them) then you're going to have a hard time getting your mail through.

But ultimately, you need to get in touch with the big mail providers and especially Hotmail to go through a long approval process involving tweaking your server config and filling in forms.

Sending mail is not as simple as it used to be. Good luck with doing it from your own solution, but my advice would be to use CampaignMonitor. They have done all of this already and are whitelisted and take out the hassle of doing it yourself.
