Big problem regarding my LAN.

Hey Guys, I posted over at Microsoft forums with no luck whatsoever (idiots) - so hopefully I'll have more luck over here.
Basically, I have some issues regarding my domain:
My LAN configuration is: My PC -> Internet Gateway (Father's PC) -> Modem.
When I use my PC normally (using the above infrastructure), I cannot access my domain, or cPanel etc.
When I connect directly to the modem (My PC -> Modem) via ethernet, I can connect to my domain/cPanel fine.
The issue is not related to the port, as I can connect to the other servers using the same port. I can connect to my domain using a proxy/VPN (but I cannot use FTP, thus this is useless). O
Oh, also, I couldn't access this from the moment it was created, so it's not like it's been manually blocked, as I've not been able to connect from day 1.
To my question:
What methods are there of blocking an IP address using the default Windows XP Configuration (no third party programs). I want to troubleshoot all options.

Things you should know:
I use Avast! Antivirus, as does my father. (although this is running whilst I connect direct, so I don't think it interferes)
Neither of us use a firewall (I know, not a good idea, but hey - not what i'm asking about).
I have tried allowing exceptions in Windows Firewall, even though it's disabled.

Any ideas at all?

So you cannot access anything in the outside world using the gateway PC? Can you access locally networked computers?

James Birkett 07-24-2009 11:09 AM

I can access everything fine using my current infrastructure (the gateway one) - it's just my own particular server which I can't access.
I'm currently using the structure now and I can access vB fine (as you can see), as well as every other forum, website etc EXCEPT my own server. This is why it's such a strange case.

Anybody have any ideas?

Can you access your site from your PC when it is plugged into the modem directly? Only a temporary thing but a valuable test.

Personally, I'd buy a inexpensive router/switch and plug the modem into that and then each PC directly into the router. You can get a 4 port LAN (your PCs), 1 Port WAN (modem) router for about $20.00 at many stores these days. Internet Connection Sharing is a pain.

Thanks for replying Wayne and Dismounted,
Yeah, when my PC is directly connected to the modem, I can access my site & server just fine.
That's why i'm so confused about it. When I'm directly connected I can access fine, it's when i'm connected to my father's PC i cannot.

I'd love to do that, but my dad likes to "hog" the internet connection for his downloads, leaving me with the leftover bandwidth . He won't use routers.

It sounds as if he doesn't want you on the net, until that changes your are screwed.

James Birkett 07-26-2009 01:22 PM

Everything works fine using my current setup. Every web page etc, EXCEPT my server. So if the case was him not wanting me on the net, he wouldn't just block my server would he?
I think the IP is being blocked somewhere, but i'm not sure where or how. I was trying to see how many different methods of blocking an IP are available in Windows XP by default, but over at Microsoft forums you're lucky to get a reply within 6 month

Can you do a ping to your server?

James Birkett 07-27-2009 12:36 PM

The ping request times out
