welcome threads

I have the mod installed that auto creates a welcome thread for newly registered users.
Is there way to have the "referred by" field auto inserted into the thread ONLY if the field is filled out?

------------
for example:

welcome [insert username here]......
you have been referred by [referred username]
------------

something to that effect?
