how is that done on vB.org ? just wondering 'cuz it's pretty cool....

It's default vbulletin. Look in your vboptions - list all the options and use your browser search to find all instances of Similar Threads and you will see how to turn it on. (I've also posted a list of the options a few times lately - you could search on posts make by me relating to Similar Threads.)
