How do I make a forum only visible to a specific social group?

There is no default functionality to do that, and I have not seen a modification that could do that either.

Then it was a modification that I haven't seen (nor Hanson). Perhaps you should ask the admin at the forum you saw this where they got the modification or how they coded it.

It appears that the forums are just hidden. Once you enter a social group you are a member of, then there is a link in the lower navigation bar to link to the forum. They also display the forums and threads below on the same page that looks just like the display on the forums/home page.
