Complete newbie here... need some direction

Hi all,

I'm setting up a local community forum and I'm a complete newb to web design and forum management. I have a few books on the way and my roommate has been following web design for a few years now. He helped me set it up but I really don't want to rely on him too much.

Basically I need to guided in the right direction.
