Users able to close accounts?
 
I've had a couple users ask to have their accounts closed (children being childish)... and I didn't want to ban them in case they wished to return... (and because we don't want to seem like overly-strict moderators)....

As a solution I created a usergroup "Closed" (so they can view threads but do nothing else) and made it joinable... Thus allowing them to join it and have it "closed"...

Does Vbulletin have a built in option for this? Or is my temporary solution going to be permanent?

What is it you want to happen? Your solution sounds fine if the end result is what you want (the users to only view threads).
