When people post long links it shortens them and messes them up

I need this fixed asap... HOw can I fix it? People will post links and it will be like

http://www.whatever.com/whatever/wha...r/whatever.zip

Then when you click on it, it goes to that link which is obviously broken. How can I solve this problem?

If they are posting a link that looks like "http://www.whatever.com/whatever/wha...r/whatever.zip", then you can't do anything to fix it. They need to post the complete, unshortened link.

_Ryfe_ 03-11-2009 07:38 PM

They are posting the complete link.. It's auto-shortening it.

vB will take a long link and shorten the *text* that is shown, but not the url link part. Like for this post:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthrea...53#post1765953

It shows as shortened, but hover over it and it is complete. Now, if somebody just copies the text and pastes it in a non WYSIWYG editor, it will be wrong. But, it should be fine copied into a WYSIWYG editor or if they do a Copy Link instead of just a regular copy text on it.

Yeah, I know. I may be dealing with some special ed type users... I'll have to find out.

If someone post a link that looks like that, and its broken, they copied it from another forum.

Person A - post a link - forum software shortens link so it does not break the frame of the site.

Person B - copies shorted link and post it in another forum - link is broken.

They need to right click the original link, copy link location, then post the "real" link in your forum. Or open the link from the original site and copy the address.

Broken links like that are a sign that people are coping and pasting information from one forum to the other.

Ive bore witness to this happening from links that weren't copied as shortened links.

It happens sometimes that the actual link itself is shortened as well.... ive never known what to do about it.

Lynne 03-11-2009 09:48 PM

Really? I've never seen it happen before (not saying it hasn't, just that I've never seen it happen in the five years I've been modding/running vb). I've known users to copy/paste the link when not using the WYSIWYG editor mode and have it shortened, but I've never seen vb shorten it randomly just because it felt like it.

I started a thread at vbulletin.com for an example.

The first link is to the thread, the second link is from the thread its self. Hover over the links and you will see its a broken link. That is because I copied it from vbulletin.com

There is a thread over at vbulletin.org about urls and people coping them from other forums. So I needed an example of how VB can make a URL short by inserting periods.

As has been said, it's broken in HERE because you've copied the shortened version of the link that displays to users to stop the forum layout from breaking.

If you hover over the link OVER THERE you'll find it's full and correct. But you've copied the shortened text back over here, which has broken it.
